WHEN WE HAVE ENOUGH - A POEM

There will come a time
when we have enough.
Enough food.

Enough energy.

Enough technology
to solve problems
we once thought permanent.

The machines will hum.
The systems will stabilise.

​The old struggles will soften
their grip on our days.

And for a moment
we will think--
We made it.

But then something quieter
will rise.
Not from the world outside us
but from within.

Because when survival steps back,
something else steps forward.

​Ourselves.

And we will see
that abundance does not create harmony.
It reveals it.
Or the absence of it.

We will see it
in the way we speak to one another
when nothing is at stake.
In the way we listen—
or don’t.
In the subtle tightening
of status and comparison
finding new ground
to grow in.

We will see that
even when there is enough for everyone,
there is not yet enough
patience

understanding

capacity
to be with what is difficult
in another human being.

And we will realise--
the problem was never only the world.

It was the space between us.

And in that moment,
a different kind of work begins.

Not the work of extraction
or production
or survival.

But the work of becoming.

Becoming people
who can stay
when it would be easier to leave.
Who can listen
without needing to fix.
Who can speak
without needing to win.
Who can meet each other
not as obstacles--
but as part of the same unfolding.

This is the work
no machine can do for us.

And this is where the future
will be decided.

Not by what we build.
But by who we are
with each other
when we no longer have to fight
just to live.

Because the future
will not be limited
by what we have.

It will be shaped
by how well
we know how to love
in the presence
of enough.
